Carlisle College 15 - Newton Rigg 8

SUPER SCOTT CRUSHES "RIGG"

13th October 1997

Last Wednesday evening Carlisle College Five a side football team accepted the challenge from Newton Rigg College, Penrith - a match in which Carlisle College produced a stunning performance - resulting in a 15-8 victory. Carlisle emphatically dominated the first half of this game, however Rigg produced a fighting comeback in the second half. This unfortunately, only provoked the Carlisle Gladiators to step up a gear and prove their vast superiority.

The team were inspired by some fine saves from Lee (the cat) Gardner and some sensational finishing by Scott (macca) Hamilton who scored six goals. Other scorers included Gordon (gazza) Mcfarlane (3), Mark (madar)Roberts (3), Stuart (tino) Crooks (2) and Jason (keano)Adamson (1), and a battling performance from Paul(fergie)Smith who unfortunately began the match on the opposing side, before replacing the injured Gordon. Our boys were encouraged from the side lines by the travelling support.

Man of the match was awarded to Lee Gardner with Scott Hamilton a close second.

Going by recent 6 a side results the college team are in good form, and a lot is expected by the staff team, hope for a good turnout at the Sheepmount next sunday.

Well the season has finally kicked off , the college side played there very first match against the Zimmers , a side who had been together for nearly 10 years and it showed with there superior fitness, finishing and passing. The college side did show signs of improving and where far from disgarced by their efforts.

Last week saw the first installment against the Trinity School . This proved to be an excellent match with both sides however failing to breakdown the defences respectively, good efforts came from hamilton , roberts , adamson and gardner especially who was given several opportunites to break the dead-lock, but found the opponents goalkeeper in top form, credit goes to gardner who continued with his battle to score and seal the tie. The back four for the college were also exceptional and looked very solid as a unit.

PLAYER HISTORY :

LEE GARDNER :

Lee the CAT , Aged 21 years , Known in the team as the Cat for his superb reflexes, great shot stopper. Had trials for Liverpool but had to turn down due to alcohol problems and still can be seen today with a can of Carlsberg in one hand during games.

Mark (madar) Roberts :

Aged 18 years, the baby of the team. Plays upfront cos no-one else will , claim to fame - having a trial for Brighton and hove albion under8's. Sad Everton fan with no friends. Always needs a kick up the butt, recently returned to the side with a point to prove.

Les (chopper) Armstrong -

Aged ? to bloomin long ago to remember. Known as the chopper for obvious reasons and as left his mark on a few opposing strikers. Little is known about Chopper - origin unknown - team are not sure if he is real.

Andy (magic) Johnson -

Another reptile in the team, the tallest member of the squad , in otherwords the useless beanpole at the back. Supports Preston (say no more).

Gary (Bamber) Banks :

Aged 18+, played for Morton school, Shite F.C. During his spell with Shite F.C he was banned from playing against the Fire Brigade, due to the fact that he injured most of their players and they did not have enough to cover at work. Claim to fame - saving a shot from Paul Simpson (ex man city).
